A middle-range theory of learner empowerment, developed by Dr. Boadum, and the question underneath all four areas of research: why do people working equally hard, under equal strain, end up so far apart?

Empowerment Under Demand (EUD) is a middle-range, explanatory theory of motivated self-regulated performance under sustained cognitive and emotional load. It sits at the intersection of motivation science, self-regulated learning, and wellbeing science — drawing on Self-Determination Theory for its motivational core, on psychological empowerment theory for its structure, and on wellbeing research for the affective conditions that sustain it. It is specified as a latent mediation model, which makes it testable rather than merely descriptive.

The question is an old one and poorly answered. Across demanding environments the same puzzle recurs: two people attend the same sessions, keep the same hours, carry the same load — and one thrives while the other struggles. Effort and ability do not account for the gap. Something sits between what a person brings to the work and what they are able to do with it.

EUD names that something and specifies how it operates. Empowerment is defined as the psychological state through which a person converts wellbeing and self-directed readiness into sustained engagement and performance — a state with perceived competence, autonomy, purpose, and relational grounding as its constituents. The proposed causal chain is ordered: wellbeing shapes readiness, readiness enables empowerment, and empowerment mediates the effect of both on performance. Preclinical medical education was chosen as the first test case because it makes the dynamic unusually visible — vast content, high-stakes assessment, professional identity formation, and strain that is structural to the training rather than incidental to it.

Structure

Six domains, three systems

Empowerment is modelled as an emergent construct arising from three interdependent systems — motivational, cognitive, and affective–social. Cognitive agency and self-directed control carry competence; meaning and purpose, and impact, carry autonomy; social support and belonging, and resilience and wellbeing integration, carry relatedness.

Contribution

What the framework adds

Earlier empowerment models were developed in organisational settings and built on cognitive appraisal alone. EUD embeds resilience and wellbeing within the empowerment construct rather than treating them as distal outcomes, and adds self-direction as the process linking why a person learns to how they learn.

Why it matters

Measurable, and therefore improvable

Treating empowerment as a measurable state rather than a motivational mood makes it a target for intervention. A profile across six domains tells an educator something a single wellbeing score cannot: not only that a learner is struggling, but through which system, and therefore what kind of support would help.

Scope

Not intrinsically medical

Nothing in the architecture is specific to medicine. The general claim concerns how people convert internal conditions into effective action under load, and should hold wherever effortful, self-regulated work is sustained under pressure — graduate and professional training, and high-stakes knowledge work. Replication beyond medicine is the current programme.

The instrument. Alongside the theory Dr. Boadum developed the EUD-26, a twenty-six item measure of empowerment under demand — the six domains, and the wellbeing and readiness conditions beneath them. A framework without a way to measure it stays an argument; the EUD-26 is what makes the claims falsifiable, and it is the basis of the validation work now underway.

The system. A digital tool built on the model is in development. It administers the battery, reads the profile beneath the score, and routes each person toward what their own pattern calls for — two people with the same overall score can need entirely different support. It never recommends simply working harder, and it is strictly non-diagnostic.

The theory papers and the validation work are in preparation and not yet peer reviewed. Findings are held back until publication; what is described here is the framework and its rationale, not its results.
