Where the callings meet

For years I thought these were two vocations that happened to share one man. They are a single calling — they answer to a single God, who inspired the Scriptures, knit together the flesh, and gave us the capacity to learn.

In the sanctuary

A woman testified that she had beaten death, faithlessness, and the surgeon. The congregation cheered. I sat in the conflict.

At the bedside

A few pints of blood would have saved her. What stood in the way was not the medicine, but what she had been taught God required.

In the lecture hall

The same demanding curriculum, met by students who did not arrive with the same reserves. What strengthened one of them broke another.

So I carry all three at once, and I have stopped trying to keep them apart.
