For years I thought these were two vocations sharing one man. They are a single calling — one God inspired the Scriptures, knit together the flesh, and gave us the mind to learn.
A woman testified she had beaten death, faithlessness and the surgeon. The congregation cheered. I sat in the conflict.
A few pints of blood would have saved her. What stood in the way was not the medicine, but the teaching.
The same curriculum, met by students who did not arrive with the same reserves. What strengthened one broke another.
So I carry all three at once, and I have stopped trying to keep them apart.
